The Savior

Study Guide: Week 4

The Savior

Isaiah 7:14
Summary: Psalm 51:5 and Romans 5:12-21 teach that all humans (after Adam and Eve) have been born with a sinful nature. It’s human nature to sin (Romans 3:9-20: from head to toe). As a result, every person has sinned and cannot reach God’s standard of goodness and righteousness (Romans 3:23). In response to this spiritual darkness, God sent His Son (born of a virgin: Matthew 1:22-23; Luke 1:26-38) to save us from our sins (Matthew 1:21).

Prophesized in Isaiah 7:14, God promised to be with us (“Immanuel” from Isaiah 7:14 means “God with us”). Mary is told to name her baby “Jesus” (the Greek form of Joshua that means “God saves”) because he will be the savior of the world (Luke 2:11; John 4:42; 1 Timothy 4:10; 1 John 4:14). As our savior, Jesus provides a way for us to receive forgiveness (see sermon notes on Sacrifice) and be reconciled to God (Romans 5:11; 2 Corinthians 5:18-19).

Scripture: 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Reflection
1. Why do you think people look for signs from God to confirm their faith? Although God may (or may not) provide signs for us, do you think it’s right or wrong to look for a “sign” from God?
2. How was this prophecy fulfilled? (see Matthew 1:22-23; Luke 1:26-38)
3. Some believe that Jesus was born without a sinful nature (cf. Psalm 51:5; Romans 5:12-21) because he conceived by the Spirit and born of a virgin. Agree or disagree. Discuss.
4. The virgin birth highlights God’s power (Luke 1:26-38). Specifically, that “nothing will be impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37). How can this story encourage your faith?
5. “Immanuel” means “God with us.” Share about a time when you sensed that God was with you.
6. Mary’s baby was given the name “Jesus.” How does the meaning of this name connect to the idea of God with us?
7. Is there a family member or friend that needs to hear the gospel? Perhaps you can invite him to our Christmas Eve service and/or initiate a spiritual conversation with him/her this week.
