Study Guide: Week 2

LESSON 2: True Worshipers Receive

1 Corinthians 4:6-7
6 I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another. 7 For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?

Reflection
1. How does Scripture reveal “our need for God to enable our worship…at every step?” (pp. 33-35). Why is this truth important in light of our worship of God?

2. 1 Corinthians 4:6-7 teaches the authority of God’s Word (against the temptation to place teachers and leaders “on par” with Scripture). How can we guard against this tendency?

3. 1 Corinthians 4:6-7 also highlights the significance of grace (unmerited favor; receiving something that we don’t deserve). How does receiving the gift of Jesus (through grace) impact our worship of God?

4. What does Paul mean when he says that some of the Corinthian Christians were “boast[ing] as if [they] did not receive it [grace]?”

5. Kauflin observes: “Our worship of God begins with God revealing himself to us and is sustained by that revelation.” (p 40) What’s the implication of Kauflin’s statement in light of our worship services?

6. Kaulflin addresses four misconceptions “about how God’s Word is a gift from God that enables us to worship him.” (pp. 41-46). Which one stands out the most and why? Discuss.
